The Top Five Myths of the Content Business

Telecommunications operators in many countries today increasingly turn to triple play services that bundle video, VoIP and data to sustain growth, retain subscribers, and counter the threat of similar services launched by cable MSOs.

However, it is the content side of providing a video service that seems to cause the most headaches for operators who are new to the game. In our engagements with telcos in countries throughout the region, BNS often encounters many myths and misconceptions regarding the content business.

Following is an excerpt of an article by BNS CEO Jeffrey Soong that aims to examine and dispel some of these myths and in the process identify ways telcos can develop the right content strategy and internalize content expertise, to compete effectively in today's dynamic environment.

Myth #1: We Can't Make Money from Content
The first mistake executives often make is looking at content as a commodity, one which must be bought low and sold high. In fact for a new video service, the intangible value good content brings is often greater than the tangible value of subscription fees and PPV orders. It can help the brand building and enhance the perceived value of a new service.

Myth #2: It's Difficult to Get Good Content
The fact is that there is plenty of good content out there looking for a home. Besides domestic content, an abundance of high quality niche content is produced every year from around the world, suitable for localization. This is the area where a good content aggregator can help with sourcing and logistics.

Myth #3: What's Popular Elsewhere Must be Popular Here
Each customer has different tastes and content and programming needs to be adjusted accordingly. It is only through continuous audience measurement, lineup adjustment, and program promotions that an operator can offer truly compelling content.

Myth #4: Hollywood is Weary of the Broadband Platform
Content protection is still the primary concern of the studios, so investing in a solid content protection system is an absolute must for video service operators. However, there are a lot of secure and cost effective solutions available today.

Myth #5: We Will Never Understand the Content Business
While the content business is different from many other businesses, this does not mean operators should always rely on third parties for content acquisition. However, a good consultant can help setting up a well functioning content department and advise on strategy and management.
